Books, Books and more Books

Kay is always finding and ordering wonderful creative books for Wingdoodle. Last time I purchased Paper Transformed which ended up being a great book and I made a series of 4 class from it.  Kay has done it again and ordered another exciting, creative book called Surface Treatment Workshop and it looks like I will be doing more classes based on a book but this time it will be on Surface Treatments. It covers using such mundane things as aluminum foil, masking tape and shaving cream to create interesting and fun backgrounds and textures.  I love doing these types of classes so make sure you keep an eye out for the class schedule coming out in September.  If you can't wait till then Wingdoodle has one book left but don't despair Kay will be ordering more.

Here is a look at some of the other new books that have arrived at Wingdoodle this past week.

Inventory and Books

Today is day 4 of inventory and it is going quickly but if you have done inventory before in a store you know that counting gets a bit tedious.  While Adele and I were counting books today we was opening and scanning through some of the books.  I have been working at Wingdoodle for over 2 years now and never really realized what a wonder and extensive selection of  books we carry.  Kay does a fantastic job of ordering high quality and visually beautiful instructional and informative books in everything from dollmaking to journaling.  Our journaling books are some of the best I've seen anywhere.  We even have a book on things to make with a dead computer. Adele believes that we have one of the best selection of art and craft books this side of Boston.  If you are a person who likes to look through and feel a book before you buy it Wingdoodle is the place to come.  We have people come into the store and sit on the floor by the bookshelves or take a stack of books to the demo table and look through them on a regular bases.  We will be reopening Tuesday January 18th.

See you all in 2 weeks.

Dada?

Inspired by the "Dada" notion of making art from materials that would not typically be combined or expected to go together, and driven by a similar sense of irony and humor, this exciting book by Linda and Opie O-Brien shares their unique approach to making mixed-media dolls.  It is not only a "must-have" volume for anyone interested in found object art and the human form, but it is also a thoughtful and provocative exploration of the power, symbolism and cultural significance of dolls and representational figures.

The authors share detailed techniques for using surface embellishments, creating faces, heads, and limbs, using molds and molding products and building and transforming disparate objects into whimsical, inspiring dolls.  Starting with a variety of substrates-a wood block, a canvas, a tin can, a book and a box construction-readers are guided step by step through five types of doll constructions.

Included in the book are instructions for making a box construction doll, a wood block substrate doll, a two-sided canvas frame doll, a tin can doll and a book doll.  Numerous variations on each of the core projects for further experimentation and an inspiring gallery of mixed-media dolls from leading artists who discuss their methods and share their very personal answers to the question: "What is a doll?"
